about

Published in 1971 by Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, Las Venas Abiertas de América Latina presents an historical survey of the Spanish/Portuguese speaking part of our continent. The now-literary classic breaks down in great detail how the natural resources of Latin America have been exploited by Western powers for centuries since colonization, influencing the economic, political and sociological development of these areas while scarring generations. Andy Robinson’s Gold, Oil and Avocados: A Recent History of Latin America in Sixteen Commodities, released in 2020 and a sort of modern version of Galeano’s classic, eloquently demonstrates that (sadly) things have not changed for the better.
