about

An allusion to the two predominant Indigenous societies in the Caribbean at the time of contact with Spanish Conquistadors. The Taínos - an agricultural and mostly peaceful society - inhabited Jamaica, Cuba, Hispaniola, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the northern Lesser Antilles, while the Caribes (or Kalinago) - a warrior dominated society - inhabited northeastern South America, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Dominica. After coexisting as rival groups for many generations, both Taínos and Caribes were virtually extinct a few decades after the European arrival and colonization of their lands.
