América, El Continente

from Música De Las Américas by Miguel Zenón

about

In the world we live today the word “America” is almost exclusively associated with one country (the United States of America) and not with the continent as a whole. Obviously this wasn’t always the case; as a matter of fact, this only became customary after 1898, when the United States annexed the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, among other territories. This transformed the country into an empire (which included colonies as well as states), and higher powers felt another name was needed, if only to symbolize its rise into expansion and domination. Various names were thrown into the mix, including Imperial America, the Greater Republic and the Greater United States. Oddly enough the word “America”, which up to that point had served to define everything from Alaska to the Patagonia, eventually came out on top.
