Quítate de La Vía, Perico

from Sonero: The Music of Ismael Rivera by Miguel Zenón

/

about

One of Maelo's greatest hits, which he recorded with the legendary percussionist and bandleader Rafael Cortijo in 1961. The original tells the story of "Perico", a deaf man who gets run over by a train because he couldn't hear the horn. The sound of the train was emulated by the saxophone section on the original version, an effect we use extensively on our take.
